We are presented with troubling images in our gospel reading this week. Jesus shares that there will be wars, famines, and earthquakes. Amidst all these dire events is his reassurance that they are like birth pangs. Come to worship reminded that God is in control and plans our future. Let's be grateful that suffering will end in God's time and kingdom.

This week's gospel reading is the familiar story of the widow's mite. Yet before we see her offering lifted up by Jesus, he warns his disciples to beware of the scribes. He condemns those who give the appearance of faithfulness and generosity yet take from others, seeking honor and riches for themselves. Let us humbly come to worship to examine our hearts and actions and pray for authentic and sacrificial giving.

This week's gospel reading features the story of Lazarus, yet he never speaks. Instead we hear Martha and Mary telling Jesus about their brother's death. Jesus responds to each sister with words of comfort and shared tears. We come to worship to thank God for coming to us, for hearing our cries, and for responding to our grief.
